Identification of Modern Photograph Processes

Although the main focus of this 4-day course is the identification of the most common modern photograph processes and finishing techniques, general preservation policy surrounding modern photograph collections will be discussed. The processes will be covered in theory, and during practical sessions participants will examine the Fotorestauratie Atelier’s extensive study collection under magnification and using different lighting to aid in distinguishing between processes.
Participants will learn about the materials and technique affiliated with the various processes, as well as the visual characteristics that distinguish one process from the other. The differences between true silver gelatine prints and other “black and white” processes will be discussed, and participants will learn to distinguish between the color processes such as, chromogenic, dye transfer, dye diffusion, silver dye bleach photography and inkjet prints, as well as the finishing techniques associated with each of these.

Preservation of Photograph Collections

During this 3-day workshop participants will learn about the deterioration affiliated with the various photographic processes. Storage, housing and exhibition guidelines will be discussed for negatives, 19th Century photographs and for modern and contemporary processes. During course practicals participants will view damage and deterioration on study collection photographs. The course also covers the main aspects of loan requirements and condition surveying of photographs.
